The AFL New Zealand Academy will improve the skills and fitness of athletes, through a training and development programme.

The Academy consists of two levels:

Level 1: for Athletes that are new entrants to Academy and New Zealand representative pathway

Level 2: for Athletes continuing their Academy and New Zealand representative pathway with their next step U18 New Zealand Hawks or Senior New Zealand Hawks.

Eligibility for each level is also age related changing each year, based on the year you were born. Eligibility for this year can be found at

New Zealand Hawks Academy Level 1

New Zealand Hawks Academy Level 2

Academy Athletes are selected from the AFL New Zealand Youth Boys Competition March of each year with each level containing up to 30 athletes. New Zealand Hawks Academy teams play touring Australian teams, April each year, with final selection of the New Zealand Hawks Academy teams being reduced to 24 athletes at the start of April each year.

With limitations on programmes delivered in the South Island, talented players identified in the regions of Christchurch and Otago will be provided with a development staff and programme in place of the Youth Boys competition. The opportunity then exists for a fast track entry into the AFL New Zealand Academy as a wild card entrant.

Academy athletes will participate in skill development, athletic testing and measurement, game play and personal development.

Further opportunities arising from the AFL New Zealand Academy include, selection into New Zealand Hawks Academy teams, AFL New Zealand National Combine selection, access to talent scouts and AFL International Scholarships.
