Southern Saints select Josh Morgan-Ranui as their Number 1 Draft pick
24 Nov, 2016
The Southern Saints have selected Josh Morgan-Ranui as their number 1 AFL New Zealand draft selection to play in the 2017 AFL New Zealand Premiership.
The 17 year old from Wellington became involved with the sport through the Hawks Cup Secondary School competition in 2015 where he represented Wellington College. Since then, he has been making waves with his hard nosed attitude and desire to become the best AFL player in the country.
At 187cm tall and 97 kilos, Josh is a strong footballer who uses his size to his advantage when he lines up for his local Wellington Club side the North City Demons. Josh was selected for the Level 2 NZ Hawks side who played the AFL South East in Auckland during April this year and travelled to Melbourne with the U18 NZ Hawks in May where he played some exceptional football.
With former Saint and 2016 Best and Fairest winner Brandon Sucu having left the club to move to Australia, Josh is a great fit to slot into the side where new Head Coach Warwick Kain can’t wait to see what he can produce for the Saints.
“Josh is one of the most exciting young players in NZ. He is strong and has great athleticism for someone his size. His overall skill level is very high which can only develop even more and is the type of player to pull off something magical during a game and make it look easy.”
Kain will also be looking to compliment the Saints experience with the raw talent of this future star of the game.
