Magpies eye back to back as Auckland Club footy returns

25 Aug, 2017

The 2017 Auckland AFL will kick off this weekend with its Pre-season competition at Mountfort Park in Manurewa before the season proper commencing on Sunday September 3rd.

The biggest league in the country will see defending champions, the Waitakere Magpies eye back to back Premierships after going through the competition unbeaten in 2016. The Magpies will return with a strong squad which includes a handful of New Zealand representatives and will travel to Manurewa to play the Raiders in round one. The Raiders have a young squad with a heap of talent and could cause an upset early on in the competition.

In an exciting time for the league, their will be a new club on debut in the form of the Howick Hornets. The Hornets will be coached by Andrew Azzopardi and their first ever hitout will be on home turf at Paparoa Domain against the 2016 runners up, the University Blues.

The Mt Roskill Saints and North Shore Tigers have had strong pre-seasons and will meet in Round one at War Memorial Park in Mt Roskill. Both these sides boast a high number of New Zealand players who have recently returned from the 2017 AFL International Cup and are early favourites to meet in the Grand Final.

2017 is going to be an exciting season, so make sure you get down to watch the games and support your team.
