22 Mar, 2018

The AFL New Zealand Rising Star award will be awarded weekly to a standout young player in the 2018 AFL New Zealand Premiership.

Each week the award will be allocated to those who show ability that favours the core components it takes to become an AFL Player. To be eligible to be nominated for the award, a player must be born in 2000 or younger.

The AFL New Zealand Rising Star award for round 6 of the 2018 AFL New Zealand Premiership has been awarded to Sam Anderson from the AFL New Zealand Youth Academy.

The 16 year old played as for the Central Giants as a development player during round 6 and was a superb inclusion to the midfield.

Anderson, who hails from Christchurch, was involved in alot of the action where he showed off his hunger for the footy around the contest and used his fitness and agility to evade the opposition.

Sam was acknowledged in the round 6 team of the week and with further development, Anderson could become a key figure in the Canterbury and New Zealand community in year’s to come.

“Sam’s willingness to take on feedback and apply is one of his great attributes. Sam brings purpose to training and games, and performed well in the premiership, it will be good to see how he fares against his peers.” National Youth Manager, Mick Coultard.

AFL New Zealand Media spoke to Sam during the week.

What School/University do you attend?

I attend St Bedes College Christchurch.

What kind of sports did you play growing up?

Growing up I played Rugby, Touch and Cricket.

How did you get into AFL?

I got into AFL through the South Island secondary school tournament, we won the tournament and my footy career started from there. I was then selected into the AFL New Zealand Academy and started playing for the mighty Ashburton Eagles in the Canterbury Australian Football League (CAFL).

What do you enjoy about playing AFL?

I love playing AFL as it is a heavily team involved sport and I love being able to share my skills and learn new skills from all others in the game.

It’s also great for my fitness and physicality.

The game is very fast paced which I highly enjoy as there is a high Adrenalin rush and everyone is involved.

What are your goals for AFL in the future?

My future goals for AFL is to make the AFL New Zealand Level 2 Academy side for April and for the mighty Ashburton Eagles to win a CAFL Premiership.

What do you think your biggest advantage is out on the field?

I think my biggest advantage is my fitness and agility as this allows me to get around the ground and be involved in as much play as possible.
