Nominees for 2018 AFL New Zealand Coach of the Year

AFL New Zealand would like to congratulate the following nominees for the 2018 AFL New Zealand Coach of the Year.

 

The winner will be announced at the 2018 High Performance Awards which will be held on Sunday the 22nd of April at Mac’s Function Centre in Wellington.

 

Congratulations to all the nominees!

 

Chris Mundell

Chris Mundell is the current Assistant Coach of the New Zealand Senior team and has been the Head Coach for the national U18 side for the past two years.

Chris holds a Level 2 AFL coaching Accreditation and has involvement at local level where he is the Head Coach for local Auckland club, the University Blues.

 

Dave Abetz

Dave Abetz has been the Head Coach of the Northern Suns for the past three seasons in the AFL New Zealand Premiership.

Abetz guided the Suns to second place in the 2017 competition and was one win away from a claiming the title.

Dave was at the helm of the Academy Level 2 side in 2017 won the Coach of the Year award back in 2016.

 

Mitch Ryan

Mitch Ryan has progressed nicely in the coaching ranks.

The 24 year old was the first ever coach of a New Zealand team to win a series over a touring Australian side when the AFL New Zealand Youth Girls defeated the Mornington Peninsula Youth Girls over the 2017 ANZAC weekend.

Mitch was also the coach of local Auckland Club side, the North Shore Tigers who took out the 2017 competition for the first time in nine years and to cap things off, Ryan was Assistant Coach of the Auckland NPC side who won back to back titles in December last year and was also nominated in the Volunteer of the Year category.

 

Rob Malone

Former St Kilda listed player Rob Malone is the head coach of the New Zealand Senior side and steered the team to the 2017 AFL International Cup Grand Final against Papua New Guinea on the MCG last August.

Rob was named as the head coach of the prestigious International Cup ‘World Team’ and took out the AFL New Zealand Coach of the year award in 2017.

He has been involved with coaching in New Zealand for over 12 years and is an asset to our community.

 

Warwick Kain

2017 AFL New Zealand Premiership winning coach Warwick Kain has been involved with coaching AFL in NZ for almost 10 years.

Unearthing talent such as Otago Rugby star Ben Miller and New Zealand Senior squad member Josh Mackie, Warwick has been a pioneer in the Otago region.
