Giants retain Golden Boot and key defender for 2019 Premiership

Reigning AFL premiers, the Central Giants have announced that they have retained 2018 Golden Boot James McKenzie and NZ defender Harison Manks for the 2019 season. 

 

Harison and James will join Captain Sam McKenzie as the three players that classify under the Retained Players List (RPL) category 1.

RPL 1 is the Retention of Auckland based players who have played for the New Zealand Senior team over the past 12 months. (Up to 3 players retained).

James McKenzie

2018 Golden Boot winner James McKenzie will return to the Central Giants for the 2019 Premiership season.

James was one of the in form players for the Northern Suns during the early rounds of the 2016 AFL New Zealand Premiership until a shoulder injury ruled him out for the next 12 months.

His return in 2018 saw the the 23 year old kick a Premiership record of 31 goals and is a fast and agile small forward who last represented New Zealand in April this year.

James is the brother of Central Giants Captain Samuel McKenzie and will again look to combine with his brother in the Giants forward line.

 

Harison Manks

Harison Manks was a squad member of the Premiership winning Southern Saints in 2017 before moving to the Central Giants in 2018 where he won his second Premiership in as many years.

The 21 year old is a smart defender and is a strong mark who often leads the statistics in this category.

Manks made his debut for New Zealand during the ANZAC game against the AFL Academy in April 2017 and will be a key member of the 2020 International Cup squad.
