Hutt Valley Eagles Coach joins the Premiership

19 Nov, 2018

Hutt Valley Eagles Head Coach Garth Sabo has been appointed as the assistant coach of the Southern Saints for the 2019 AFL New Zealand Premiership.

After relocating from Melbourne in 2009, Sabo became involved in the Wellington AFL after meeting former Northern Suns and current Hutt Valley Eagles Captain, James Kusel.

The Eagles are flying in 2018 having only dropped two games this season (which they led at three quarter time) to the Eastern Suburbs Bulldogs and have their eyes on the main prize of a Wellington Premiership.

“We have a good mix of players who have experience and guys that are still new to the game so its great to see improvement and confidence build every week.”

Having played AFL the majority of his life, Sabo spent most of the time in the forward line but enjoyed sneaking back into defence when he got the chance.

He will join Andrew Congalton and Craig Goodhue at the Saints and can’t wait to get stuck in.

“I’m looking forward to the coming season with the Southern Saints and to seeing the calibre of talent on display within our team.

Also look forward to assisting Andrew and Craig as we set out to win another Premiership. For me personally, I hope that each player will walk away better than when they started the season, me included.”
