Draft Preview: Saints squad members set for big week of AFL

22 Nov, 2018

The Mt Roskill Saints will be vying for Premiership glory this weekend when they contest the Auckland AFL Grand Final on Saturday. Two players in the Saints squad will also be lining up in the AFL New Zealand National Draft next Wednesday the 28th as they look to secure themselves a spot in one of the four squads for the 2019 AFL New Zealand Premiership.

Trent Morrissey

Trent Morrissey has played an important part in the Mt Roskill Saints forward-line in 2018.

A small forward with an accurate kick, his greatest strength is his tackle pressure.

He does not take a backward step to anyone, with many a goal scored by the Saints off the back of strong effective tackles by Trent.

Morrissey reads the game well and gets himself into good positions to receive the ball, a valuable part of any forward line.

Matt Palmer

A former New Zealand representative gymnast who competed in two Commonwealth Games, Matt is now in his third year of football with the Mt Roskill Saints.

Playing as a roving back and defensive midfielder, Matt’s pressure around the ball is second to none.

His power-to-weight ratio (a hangover from his competitive gymnast days) is a huge strength, when you get tackled by Matt, you stay tackled.

This year his game with the ball has taken a massive leap forward with Matt finding himself in great positions to intercept mark and be released from the half back line to start an attack.
