Saints and Giants play out another thriller at QBE

11 Mar, 2019

Following their tight finish back in round 2, the Southern Saints and Central Giants have produced another thrilling game of football at QBE Stadium yesterday afternoon as the Saints scored in the dying minutes to score a 6 point win to stay in number 1 spot on the ladder.

The Saints got off to a flyer as James Southby kicked 2 first quarter goals and was supported by Harley Jenkins and Michael Boyce as they went into the first break leading by 19 points.

The second quarter was more even as both sides found their rhythm.

Harison Manks was repelling the Saints attack throughout the game with repeated defensive marks while Tyson Schmid was working hard in the middle of the ground.

Kenta Ukita was applying a heap of pressure around the contest and was teaming nicely with Carlos Donnell-Brown whose work rate was phenomenal.

The Giants held the Saints to only 1 goal in the third term thanks to the hard work of Nick Rhodes. Down the other end of the field, three goals on the trot from Troy Brown, Wade Eatts and Wayne Sullivan cut back the Saints margin to 3 points at three quarter time.

Both sides went toe to toe in the final quarter both kicking 2 goals each early on and with time ticking down, they were both desperate to earn the 4 points.

Jevaan Croft goaled with 2 minutes left on the clock to put the Saints in front as they managed to hold on and retain top spot on the ladder.

The hero:

Nico Donnell-Brown has gone from strength to strength down in defence this season. Normally out-shadowed by his brother Carlos, Nico’s hard work rate and defensive pressure helped them get over the line and was a deserved winner for the Saints best player.

The support cast:

Kenta Ukita and Carlos Donnell-Brown are gelling more and more in the centre. Donnell-Brown’s control of the footy is top notch while Ukita’s defensive pressure is exceptional for a player of his size.

The consolation effort:

Tyson Schmid continues his hot run of form in his debut season of the Premiership. The midfielder was strong once again, racking up multiple possessions in a losing side.

Goal Scorers:

Southern Saints: Harley Jenkins 3, James Southby 3, Alex Fakatoumafi 1, Jevaan Croft 1, Michael Boyce 1

Central Giants: Steph Tabaillou 2, Nathan Ryan 2, Wayne Sullivan 2, Tyson Schmid 1, Troy Brown 1, Wade Eatts 1

Best on ground:

Central Giants: Troy Brown

Southern Saints: Nico Donnell-Brown
