Young Cantab claims Round 8 Rising Star

The AFL New Zealand Rising Star award will be awarded weekly to a standout young player in the 2019 AFL New Zealand Premiership.
Each week the award will be allocated to those who show ability that favours the core components it takes to become an AFL Player. To be eligible to be nominated for the award, a player must be born in 2001 or younger.
The AFL New Zealand Rising Star award for round 8 of the 2019 AFL New Zealand Premiership has been awarded to Thomas Turner from the Southern Saints.
Cantabrian Thomas Turner put in a terrific effort for the Saints in Round 8 to claim the award.
He has been a consistent player all season and is fast developing into skillful midfielder.
Fast and evasive, Turner was recently announced in the U18 New Zealand Falcons side to travel to Melbourne where he will add depth to the already experienced squad.
What School do you attend?
I graduated from Riccarton High School last year.
What sports did you play growing up?
I was involved with BMX racing when I was younger and also played Rugby.
How did you get into AFL?
A good family friend roped me into coming down and getting involved with club footy in Canterbury.
What do you enjoy about playing AFL?
I like how it’s so fast paced and how quick the game moves.
What are your goals for AFL in the future?
My goals for the future is to get a win over in Melbourne with the U18’s in a few weeks.
What do you think your biggest advantage is out on the field?
My biggest advantage would be that I’m pretty quick and can cover lots of ground.
