09 Oct, 2019

Matt Cawley has been announced as the new Head Coach of the Western Crows for the 2020 AFL New Zealand Premiership.

Matt is relatively unknown in the New Zealand community having only arrived into the country this year and has jumped straight into the local scene as the co-coach of the University Cougars in the Canterbury Football League.

An extensive background in junior Coaching with Brisbane based clubs Coorparoo and Morningside, will ensure steady guidance for both the Western Crows and the Canterbury based training contingent.

“I am eagerly looking forward to the 2020 AFLNZ Premiership competition, acting as Head Coach of the Western Crows.  The opportunity to lead, guide, develop and achieve with a group of AFL footballers at this level is both exciting and challenging, and will no doubt be extremely rewarding as well.”

Having been involved in the game in both a playing and coaching capacity for over 35 years, Matt brings a wealth of experience and game knowledge to the Premiership.

“My aim is to add value to each and every one of the players in my team, as well as provide them with an enjoyable and rewarding experience from our time together.  Success should not always be judged by tangible results evident, but intangible reactions and actions shown by the persons you have interacted with.”

The 2019 Premiers will be aiming to create a strong team culture that leads to the ongoing improvement of its team members throughout the  2020 season.
