30 Oct, 2019
The AFL have recently reappointed AFL New Zealand Board Director Garry Carnachan for another Term.
Currently, Mr Carnachan is the CEO of School Sport NZ (formerly NZ Secondary Schools Sports Council).
School Sport NZ is the sporting service organisation that co-ordinates, promotes and protects secondary school sport for students. Established, by schools, to act as guardian of the heritage and the values of secondary school sport, School Sport NZ works with NSO’s to provide an annual calendar of 190 national or island level events. It advocates at all levels, including government ministers for school sport and provides support and professional development for all who work in school sport.
With a background in education, including as a secondary school principal, Garry moved into sport 18 years ago as Professional Development Manager for NZ Rugby Union and then as team manager for both the Hurricanes and Junior All Blacks.
A director on the boards of NZ Football (Vice President), AFL New Zealand and University and Tertiary Sport NZ, Taranaki Community Rugby Trust and a member of the NZ Community Trust Regional Advisory Committee¸ Garry has also served on the NZ Olympic Committee Education Commission.
Mr Carnachan’s experience with promoting sport, particularly to school aged students has been of huge assistance in dealing with a competitive New Zealand sporting landscape. AFL New Zealand is confident Mr Carnachan will be an asset for the development of AFL within New Zealand and we welcome his involvement.
We wish Garry well in his next term with AFL New Zealand.
