Canterbury based players Kyle Smith, James Roughan and Josh Robles have committed to play in the 2016 AFL New Zealand Premiership and even though young of age, all three bring a vast amount of experience to the competition.
The 2016 AFL New Zealand Premiership competition will commence at North Harbour Stadium on February 14th 2016 and will run over a nine week period where four teams (Northern Suns, Central Giants, Western Crows and Southern Saints) will battle it out each week, hoping to become the inaugural AFL New Zealand Premiers.
Before the competition begins, the AFL New Zealand National Draft will take place. Through the draft, the newly appointed coaches of the four recently formed teams will work towards selecting players they feel will provide them with the best possible opportunity to build a successful unit. The draft system will be broken up into seven categories to ensure all teams have a fair advantage when drafting players. A full analysis of the AFL New Zealand Draft will be made available in the following months.
Having represented New Zealand at all age levels, hard running Kyle Smith is just 21 years old but plays the sport like an experienced veteran. The Christchurch Bulldogs captain generally plays on the wing and will be an asset in any Premiership team.
James Roughan is one of the leading players with the University Cougars in the Canterbury league and has also represented New Zealand in last year’s International Cup. The roving midfielder is a smart player who positions himself in the right spot and regularly gets hand to ball.
Mid Canterbury Eagles captain, Josh Robles is an on baller (midfielder) who has been involved with the AFL New Zealand development system over the past 6 years. He has represented the New Zealand Hawks at various age groups and at only 22 years old, Robles will be one to watch.
