The Central Shakers will take to the field in 2022 as they are the first team announced for the new and improved AFL New Zealand Women’s Premiership.
The Shakers will align themselves with reigning Men’s Premiers, the Central Giants and will be hoping to emulate their achievements, both on and off the field.
With leagues in Auckland, Wellington and Canterbury, it is an exciting time for Women’s AFL in Aotearoa as the game continues to grow to new heights.
AFL New Zealand CEO, Robert Vanstam, is excited about what the Women’s game will do over the next few years.
“The momentum that currently exists in the women’s game continues to provide increased opportunities every season. My expectations would be that further teams and venue growth will take place over the next two seasons.”
The Women’s Premiership will return for its third season in 2022 following on from the success of the past 2 years and will take place in conjunction with the current Men’s Premiership between February and April.
The female competition will provide the perfect environment for girls transitioning from the Youth Competition formats to senior football and is the next step in finalising the pathway for women to participate in AFL within New Zealand.
Players will be selected from:
- Current Kahu Youth Girls
- New Zealand Representatives
- AFL New Zealand Academy
- Secondary Schools AFL Cup
- Auckland, Canterbury and Wellington Women Leagues
The Shakers will be joined by two more teams, which will be announced in the coming days.
