Giants stun Saints with fourth quarter flurry

The Central Giants have continued their hot streak from 2023, beating the Southern Saints in the season opener with a massive five goal haul in the final quarter.

The opening quarter was a tight contest, with no team able to gain a real edge. Young Saints forward Lachie McBride had a stellar start to the game, leading the way for the Saints forwards. Some wayward kicking kept them under pressure, and kept the Giants in the game, with Steph Tabaillou answering back with some straight shooting, giving the Giants the lead at first quarter time. The Saints came out firing at both ends in the second quarter, limiting the Giants to just one behind, and taking back control on the Scoreboard by kicking two goals.

Heading into the half time break the Saints held an 11-point lead, and with the back and forward arm wrestle proving difficult for either team to gain a healthy lead on the other, accuracy in front of goal was going to be the key to claiming the first win of of the season.

The Giants had some ground to make up and with and returned to their first quarter form to bring the game to within 9 points with just one quarter remaining. With jut 20 minutes left on the clock the Giants turned on the jets, and emptied the tank, with James Sharp opening their 5 goal flurry, Aaron Laverty letting rip, getting free up front to kick two and Touariki Dodds, putting the nail in the coffin.

The Giants fourth quarter effort showcased their dangerous strike power, and have made them an early front runner for as the team to beat this season.
