Inspirational Captain remains at the Saints in 2017

Michael Boyce has remained as Captain of the Southern Saints for the 2017 AFL New Premiership.

The 2016 runners just fell short of becoming Premiers in season 2016 with some narrow losses and missed opportunities but with the experience of new head coach Warwick Kain and the return of their Captain, the Saints could be the front runners for 2017.

Boyce had a strong season for the Saints and was instrumental in the backline. He appeared in the AFL New Zealand Premiership ‘Team of the week’ four times over the season which saw him selected for the end of season ‘Team of the year’.

Southern Saints 2“It was a real honour to lead the Southern Saints in the 2016 AFL New Zealand Premiership and an exciting experience forming a team with players from across the country. The competition proved tough and was very even between the four teams with the results of many games being decided by narrow margins.”

Boyce has a quality AFL career within New Zealand, Representing the NZ Hawks at the 2014 International Cup as well as campaigns against South Pacific and AFL Academy. Michaels association with New Zealand teams can be traced back to junior age groups more than a decade ago. A Grand Final victory with the Mt Roskill Saints in 2013 alongside an AAFL Best and Fairest medal, add to his list of achievements in the game.

Boyce is excited for the challenge ahead.

“Our team gelled well but it’s fair to say we didn’t quite reach our potential given some of the outstanding talent with-in our squad. We hope to take the learning from the last campaign and use them to go one better in the 2017 Premiership season.”

freeview-channel-13-_-sky-channel-231With the 2017 International Cup being held in Melbourne in August next year, it will have been a big year of footy in New Zealand and Boyce expects big things from his players looking to make the NZ Hawks squad.

“With the International Cup campaign following this year’s Premiership, the level of commitment & determination from all players gunning for a spot in the NZ Hawks squad is bound to lift.”

It is expected that expressions of interest to be listed in the AFL New Zealand National Draft will be forwarded to a selection of key players over the coming weeks.
