The Southern Saints have announced that they will add Auckland based players, Ben Hick, Carlos Donnell-Brown and Sam McKenzie to “their retained players list” for the 2017 AFL New Zealand Premiership.
Ben Hick
The Southern Saints have announced that they have retained the services of standout midfielder Ben Hick for the 2017 competition.
The Saints boasted plenty of talent during 2016 but the midfielder stood out among the group as his hard work and silky skills shone through.
Hick plays for the University Blues in the local Auckland competition and has gained a wealth of experience over the years being involved in the AFL New Zealand High Performance Programme.
Carlos Donnell-Brown
Southern Saint Carlos Donnell-Brown has achieved a lot in his short time involved with AFL.
After a solid 2016 season, the Waitakere Magpies midfielder is putting his hand up to be the Auckland AFL’s Best and Fairest as he shines every week for the west Auckland club.
Donnell-Brown captained the Green Bay High School AFL team to victory in the 2015 Senior Hawks Cup Secondary School competition. To add to that, he was named Vice-Captain and player of the tournament during the U16 NZ Hawks tour to Sydney in 2015.
The hard running midfielder is highly skilled and determined, resulting in an early call up to play for the Senior NZ Hawks against the AFL Academy on Westpac Stadium over ANZAC weekend in 2015.
Sam McKenzie
Sam McKenzie has been retained by Southern Saints head coach Warwick Kain and joins an inspiring squad for the 2017 AFL New Zealand Premiership.
Forever learning, McKenzie prides himself on his fitness and basic skills. He is a marking forward/midfielder whose contesting marking skill provides him with the ability to play against much bigger defensive opponents and still provide potency with his goal kicking ability.
The 28 year old is the current Captain of the Mt Roskill Saints and regular squad member of the NZ Hawks.
McKenzie will once again team up with fellow midfielder Ben Hick and will form a combination that could be hard to stop in 2017.
