Mykelti Continues to Rise

After only 64 days on an AFL contract, New Zealander Mykelti Lefau has quickly made a name for himself, making his debut in Round 2, he has played every game for Richmond since and has improved immensely with each outing.

Mykelti was elevated to the Richmond AFL list as part of the AFL’s Pre-Season Supplementary Selection Period, and with Richmond suffering from injury woe’s Mykelti was given his first opportunity to play on the big stage in Round 2 against Port Adelaide. Since then he has gone on to be a consistent piece of the Richmond Line up and has begun to break out as a key forward in the league.

In Round 5, playing just his fourth game at AFL level, Mykelti was a shining light in what was a rough game for Richmond. Prior to the game there was a lot of debate about fellow Richmond player and kiwi Dustin Martin’s fending ability as well as West Coast star Harley Reid’s, but Mykelti quickly silenced the debate, his rugby league background shining through as he began manhandling West Coast defenders. He has also became one of the sides key goal scorers, kicking 3 for the match, and had the potential to kick 5. This was a career high game for Mykelti and was rewarded by being voted Richmond’s Player of the Match.

A player with an exciting future ahead, Mykelti’s rise to stardom continues tonight, as he is named to once again start for Richmond in their ANZAC eve match against Melbourne. Tune in to Sky Sport 9 at 9:15pm to catch him play live, or subscribe to watch AFL to stream every game live.
