Otago superstars secured by the Saints

The Southern Saints have locked in Otago based Hayden Johnston and Josh Mackie for the 2023 Men’s Premiership Season

Hayden Johnston is continuing to lead the way for Otago AFL. The young defender is set to be a vital component to the Saints success in the upcoming season

The 2019 U18 player of the year, played a major role in the Saints 2020 Premiership winning side.

National Head Coach, Chris Mundell had touted Johnston for a selection call up firstly for the 2020 International Cup and then recently a debut for the NZ Falcons in September following back to back strong seasons in the Premiership. On both occasions Covid has dealt a blow to the key defenders aspirations.

Strong in the air and uncompromising, he reads the play well and has grown into one of the best key defenders in the country. Calm with ball in hand and touted as a future Saints Captain, Johnston has hopes of Otago representatives playing a significant role with the Saints success in 2023.

Josh Mackie will make his long awaited return to the Premiership, where he will run out for the Southern Saints next season.

From Otago, the former Northern Suns star has been the Captain of the NZ U18 side and was a pivotal member in the Suns squad for four seasons.

His agility along with his height gives him the ability to take strong marks but also the attribute of evading players which showed in his performances in past seasons of the Premiership.
