Director of Umpiring confirmed for Premiership
30 Oct, 2015
Current AFL New Zealand Board Member, Tim Stevens has been appointed as the newly formed Director of Umpiring for the 2016 AFL New Zealand Premiership.
Tim is a former New Zealand representative including the successful 2005 International Cup. After a lengthy playing career in both Wellington and Auckland Regional Leagues, the past four years has seen a conversion to the umpiring ranks. His CV includes a host of International matches, partnering with a selection of both New Zealand based and Australian umpires.
The AFL New Zealand Premiership will call on a host of experienced New Zealand based umpires but also look to incorporate visits from qualified Australian based visitors, once connections with overseas based football associations can be established. Another element of the umpiring restructure will see the addition of a cadet structure aimed at providing game time at the highest level for new umpiring prospects.
Stevens was optimistic about the benefits created by the new competition. “This is a great opportunity to accelerate the induction and training of new umpires into the New Zealand system. With so many new talented youngsters in the playing ranks, the umpires also have a coaching role in some respects.”
