Draft round up: Giants land NZ skipper
28 Nov, 2019
The Central Giants have landed the big fish of NZ Falcons Captain Andrew Howison for the 2020 AFL New Zealand Premiership season. It will be Howison’s debut season in the national competition where it is expected he leads them back to Premiership glory.
2018 National Rising Star Doug McJorrow and fast and agile forward Ben Armstrong are the other key notables from each of their categories.
Category 1: Doug McJorrow
Position: Forward
Doug McJorrow is from Wellington and has represented both the AFLNZ Academy Level 1 (Captain) and Level 2 sides.
Doug received the round 2 Rising Star in the 2018 Premiership and was the recipient of the 2018 National Rising Star at the High Performance Awards.
At such a young age, Doug has great speed and skill execution and will continue to develop his game.
Category 2: Ben Armstrong
Position: Forward
Former Rising Star award winner Ben Armstrong will return to the AFL New Zealand Premiership and play for the Central Giants in 2020.
His pace on the footy field means he can swing the momentum of the game in the blink of an eye.
Ben has been involved in two New Zealand Under 18 tours to Melbourne and has the goal of one day playing for the National Senior side.
The former Bay of Islands College student made a name for himself in 2014 when he broke the Australasian record of 7.64 seconds for the agility test at the AFL New Zealand National combine.
Category 3: Andrew Howison
Position: Midfield
New Zealand Falcons Captain Andrew Howison will be a Central Giant in 2020.
The talented midfielder will return home to Christchurch after spending 8 years leaving in Australia.
Whilst in Australia, Andrew played for Oakleigh Districts where he won a Grand Final in 2015 and was named best on ground in the same game.
More recently, Howison won back to back Premierships in 2018 and 2019 with the Dromana Tigers.
