Women’s Premiership kicks off in style

12 Feb, 2020

The Magpies have taken the honours in Round 1 of the 2020 Women’s Premiership defeating the Bulldogs at North Harbour Stadium on Sunday afternoon.

Following on from the successful inaugural Premiership in 2019, the two teams ran out on North Harbour Stadium to open the 2020 season.

The Magpies were on the board early as Melissa Baer from Canterbury kicked the opening goal of the game.

It was a 3 goal opening quarter from the Magpies as they took a 20 point lead into the first break and Luka Karalus and Izzy Goodwin were in superb form early on.

With the wind at their backs, the Bulldogs hit back in the second quarter through Bridgette Allen and Maree Heading and drew the margin back to 10 points at the main break.

Caitlin Hannah was strong on defence for the Bulldogs laying a number of tackles on the Magpies players during the first half.

The Magpies started to gel again in the third quarter with Deidre Kearney and Buell Verkade combining well to create multiple opportunities into the forward line.

The Magpies had the ball locked inside their own 50 for the majority of the third quarter and were applying a heap of pressure beofre Chelsea Young extended the lead.

With another 2 goals in the final quarter, the Magpies recorded a 41 point win.

AFL New Zealand CEO Rob Vanstam was at the game and was pleased at how everyone involved came away happy.

“The reason why the game is enjoyed is not because of its origins but because the nature of the game itself. It’s free-flowing and it gives the opportunity for everyone to try all their skills from other sports.”

Bulldogs Coach Mick Coultard was proud to witness the players development.

“Everyone had their starring moments throughout the game today and you could see each player developing and getting much more of an understanding as the game progressed.”

Magpies Coach Peter Geale said that the girls gave it their all out on the field.

“All of the experienced players in the team showed tremendous leadership skills both on and off the field today and taught the new players how to understand the game. Top effort from everyone in the team today and can’t wait until March 8th.”

Round 2 action will take place on Sunday March 8 at North Harbour Stadium starting at 12.00pm.
