Magpies win maiden Auckland Women’s AFL Premiership

15 Dec, 2020

The Norwest Magpies are the 2020 Auckland AFL Women’s Premiers, after a convincing win over the Central Eastern Blues at North Harbour Stadium on Saturday.

The two sides were playing in their first Grand Final which was the culmination of a successful first season for the Women’s game in Auckland.

The Blues were on the board early with the first goal of the game but as they have done all season long, the Magpies were dominant all over the ground and were hard on attack.

Their experience was the telling factor on the day, with the Magpies players reading play well and able to convert the final contest into short-range goals. Jolyn Collins was exceptional along with Elena Bryham, who has had a consistent season.

For the Blues, Alice Roy was excellent again playing all around the ground. Moana Va was physical in the ruck and had an excellent quarter playing in defence and Co-captain Luka Karalus had her best game of the season at Centre Half Back, bringing ball to ground and flushing out to the midfield.

Buell Verkade was awarded the Best on Ground in the Grand Final after another superb performance for the Magpies.

“All of the league have been fantastic this season. To have so many keen Women willing to give a new sport a go underpins what our culture is about and puts the competition in good stead for years to come.” Mick Coultard, Norwest Magpies.

“Really pleased to be able to have this game go ahead and that the group continue to develop. With so many players new to the game this year, every game is an opportunity to learn and build experience that will show rewards in future seasons. Thanks to Mick Coultard and the Magpies for a hugely successful season.” Central Eastern Blues Coach, Howard Gilbert.

Final Score:
Norwest Magpies – 14.8: 92

Following the game, both teams had their League Prizegiving at the ground.
