25 Mar, 2021

The AFL New Zealand Rising Star award will be awarded weekly to a standout young player in the 2021 AFL New Zealand Premiership.

Each week the award will be allocated to those who show ability that favours the core components it takes to become an AFL Player. To be eligible to be nominated for the award, a player must be born in 2002 or younger.

The AFL New Zealand Rising Star award for round 5 of the 2021 AFL New Zealand Premiership has been awarded to Max Frew from the AFL New Zealand Academy.

Max hails from Christchurch and was playing in is first Premiership game as a development player. Situated in the forward line, Max played his role and looked comfortable up front. With a number of touches, Max was named in the Team of the week after a stellar first up effort.

“Having worked with Max through the youth and academy in Christchurch over the years, I couldn’t have been more delighted to have I’m him line up for the Northern Suns at the weekend. He showed he has all the makings of a premier big man in this competition, and that alone is very exciting.”

AFL New Zealand spoke to Max and asked him a couple of questions during the week.
