Saints march past the Suns to edge them closer to Grand Final spot
29 Mar, 2021
The Southern Saints are now only one win away from another Grand Final, pushing past the Northern Suns by 85 points as they strive to win back to back titles.
The tempo of the match was set early on as the Saints kicked 4 goals into the wind, compared to the 2 goals from the Suns.
Saints midfielders Dale Johnson and Carlos and Nico Donnell-Brown were proving the difference early as they controlled the midfield.
George Read and James Kusel got into the game into the second half as the Saints pulled away, kicking another 5 goals for the Saints.
The Suns had a better third quarter as the University Blues duo of Ben Hick and Reed Cathcart started to show their magic in the midfield and they came away winning that quarter over the Saints.
As the Suns ran out of gas, the Saints put the foot on the throat and kicked another 8 goals in the final quarter to record an 85 point win.
All they need to do now is win again in round 7 as they will book their spot in the 2021 Premiership Grand Final on April 18th.
Dale Johnson showed why he was the Saints priority pick this season, the former VFL star was everywhere during the game and finished with 2 goals.
The support cast:
Clayton Hicks and Andrew Bisset were both superb in defence for the Saints as they kept the Suns to only 4 goals for the game.
The consolation effort:
Travis Walker continues to get better as the season continues. The number 1 draft pick has had a consistent season and was strong once again for the Suns in a losing effort.
“Our leaders in Andrew Bisset, James Kusel and Dale Johnson all stepped up today and we push forward to securing that Grand Final position.” Sean Mayes, Saints Head Coach.
“I saw glimpses of what we can produce today but it wasn’t enough and the Saints took full advantage.” Adem Manderovic, Northern Suns.
