2016 Youth Competition underway in Auckland and Wellington

The 2016 AFL New Zealand Youth Competition kicked off over the weekend in Auckland and Wellington with some fantastic football played in both regions.

AFL New Zealand created the Youth competition back in 2015 to compliment the pathway for participants to excel in AFL. Within the AFL New Zealand Youth competition there is a focus on improving athletes’ skills and fitness along with a training, game and development programme that highlights the necessary requirements throughout the pathway. Each week, all age groups take part in a development session which lead into a game of AFL.

North Harbour Stadium in Auckland hosted the U14 and U17 Boys along with the Youth Girls competitions. The Youth girls displayed some great skills during their game with NZ Kahu Jolyn Collins and Killarney Morey leading the way. In the U14’s game, Tom Hack returned to the Youth competition and kicked 7 goals for Magpies.  Max Hicks from Rosmini College and Declan Crann form Green Bay High showed their experience throughout their games as they were named best players for their respective sides.

In the Wellington competition, the U14 age group played some great football as brothers Aiden and Jonah Christians were named best players of the day and showed potential developing into soem great footballers.

AFL New Zealand would like to thank those parents who volunteered their time to help out throughout the day.

The Youth Competition takes a break this week due to the Labour Day long weekend but will return on Sunday the 30th of October.
