2020 AFLNZ Premiership Form Guide: Northern Suns

The Northern Suns suffered a number of big injuries early on in the 2019 season and managed to claw their way back from the bottom of the ladder to finish in third place.

The Suns picked up the highly talented Patrick Smith from Canterbury in the draft and big things are expected of the hard running midfielder. Smith will join Hick, Will Dickinson and Liam Beattie in the middle of the ground.

2019 Best and Fairest Paul Hogan returns and will be pivotal in his defensive role while key forward James Considine will also be called upon in attack and is gunning for the Golden Boot in 2020.

With a fully fit squad returning for round 1, expect the Suns to fire during the early rounds of the Premiership.

Player to watch: Ben Hick

Ben is the Captain of the Suns and will be working hard to lead his side to their first Premiership.

A regular in the New Zealand line up, Ben made his debut at the 2017 International Cup after having been involved in the AFL New Zealand High Performance Programme for ten years and has grown as a footballer over the past 3 years.

A hard running midfielder, Ben is smart around the contest and is hungry for victory in 2020.

Get excited: Patrick Smith

Patrick Smith was a county star with Cavan in his native Ireland from age 14. Playing for 10 years as a specialist midfielder and half back.

Smith moved to Melbourne at 24 and quickly found his feet playing for Mordialloc FC in the Southerns Football League.

Patrick takes a hard nosed no none sense approach to his game style.

Coming off a stellar season with the Mid Canterbury Eagles winning both the Best and Fairest and Canterbury AFL League Best Midfielder, Patrick can not wait to pull on a Northern Suns guernsey.
