2024 AFL New Zealand Women’s Premiership Announced

AFL New Zealand is pleased to announce the 2024 Women’s Premiership season

The Women’s Premiership will return for its fourth season in 2024, building on the success of the past 3 seasons and will take place in conjunction with the current Men’s Premiership between February and April.

With numbers growing in the leagues in Auckland, Wellington and Canterbury, it is an exciting time for Women’s AFL in Aotearoa as the game continues to grow to new heights.

The female competition will provide the perfect environment for girls transitioning from the Youth Competition formats to senior football and is the next step in finalising the pathway for women to participate in AFL within New Zealand.

This Season the Women’s premiership format will change to prepare players for the 2024 Pacific Cup, with the game moving to full field with 16 a side and 4 on the interchange.

This year also brings an exciting development in the Canterbury region. Women’s playing numbers in Canterbury are grown rapidly and as a result, the Southern Saints are gaining a sister team to be based in Canterbury.

This exciting new development also means that there will be one game in the Women’s season played in Chirstchurch in 2024, with the aim to have a full home and away schedule in 2025, featuring 2 games in Christchurch and games in Wellington.

Players will be selected from:

  • Current Kahu Youth Girls
  • New Zealand Representatives
  • AFL New Zealand Academy
  • Secondary Schools AFL Cup
  • Auckland, Canterbury and Wellington Women Leagues
