The AFL New Zealand Rising Star award will be awarded weekly to a standout young player in the 2019 AFL New Zealand Premiership.
Each week the award will be allocated to those who show ability that favours the core components it takes to become an AFL Player. To be eligible to be nominated for the award, a player must be born in 2001 or younger.
The AFL New Zealand Rising Star award for round 3 of the 2019 AFL New Zealand Premiership has been awarded to Xavier Bryham from the AFL New Zealand Academy.
The 16 year old Aucklander been playing as a development player and has shown maturity and experience well above his age in the first three rounds of the Premiership to be a deserved winner.
Xavier is hard at the contest and is willing and determined to develop his game through the AFL Academy and upcoming International Series against the Mornington Peninsula Junior Football League.
We had a quick chat to Xavier during the week.
What School do you attend?
Orewa College in Auckland.
What sports did you play growing up?
I played basketball and getting back into rugby
How did you get into AFL?
I got into AFL by watching it on the TV and took a liking to it.
What do you enjoy about playing AFL?
The thing I like about AFL is that you can be any size to play it
What are your goals for AFL in the future?
I hope to represent my country and aspire to learn more skills
What do you think your biggest advantage is out on the field?
