Over the past 2 weekends, AFL New Zealand in collaboration with Harbour Sport and Sport Wellington have conducted the AFL Level 1 Coaching workshop.
Over 25 coaches, both Male and Female from across three regions attended the two workshops and were delivered by AFL New Zealand staff Mick Coultard and Sam McKenzie, along with Dave Keelty from Harbour Sport and Kelly Curr from Sport Wellington.

The workshops were one of three steps to your AFL Level 1 coaching accreditation and was free and open for anyone at any coaching level.
The 3 step process to achieve the AFL Level 1 Youth and Senior Coaching Accreditation are:
- The Level 1 Youth and Senior Online Coaching Course
- A one day face-to-face facilitated workshop – Must register online see button below
- A practical coaching session
“We had a great cross-section of the community attend. There were coaches from the local senior league, parents of participants in the Youth Competition, Secondary School teachers who we have partnered with to deliver our Secondary School programmes and perhaps most encouragingly a number of current age-group players who will be coaching in our Youth Competition to develop the next generation of New Zealand footballers. The most pleasing aspect of the workshop was to see the coaches collaborating throughout the practical sections of the day sharing the varied experiences of coaching they have further enhancing their knowledge. Overall a great day for the coaches and we are looking forward to our next one!” National Coaching Development Manager Sam McKenzie.
The AFL Level 1 coaching course is recommended for coaches coaching at secondary school and local club level and is a prerequisite to coach AFLNZ Youth programmes, AFLNZ Premiership and New Zealand national teams.
