AFL New Zealand Appoints Chris Mundell as Academy Lead

The AFL New Zealand Academy is set to recommence recruitment for the upcoming New Zealand representative season. High Performance pathways for New Zealand boys and girls, continue to gain momentum both domestically and internationally and Chris Mundell’s appointment is aimed at accelerating these opportunities.

Killarney Morey

The recent involvement of Killarney Morey within the Sydney Swans system is just one example of the growing success of the AFL New Zealand talent pathway.

Mundell was keen to get underway; “Heading to Sydney and connecting with the Sydney Swans Academy management team to understand their systems and processes, is my first priority.”

Misilifi Faimalo

The Richmond signing of both Misilifi Faimalo and Mykelti Lefau, also illustrates how, when given the correct forum, New Zealand talent can rise through the pathway and be provided with excellent opportunities to succeed at the highest level.

“The learnings from my visit to Sydney will be applied to the AFLNZ Academy structures to ensure our talent outcomes can be fast tracked. The Mornington Peninsula Junior Football League tour to New Zealand in April 2023 will provide a perfect springboard for the next crop of New Zealand talent.”

Historically, the international Scholarship system has resulted in New Zealand male talent aligning with Melbourne, Hawthorn, St Kilda and Greater Western Sydney AFL Clubs. Mundell hopes that the competitive nature of the AFL Women’s talent pool within Australia can provide benefits for the untapped talent of the New Zealand market. The AFLW provides a viable alternative to first choice athletes within New Zealand with access to both amazing resources and facilities. Watch AFL Link
