AFL New Zealand Board Members Stepping Down

AFL New Zealand extends its sincere gratitude to our Appointed Directors who will be stepping down as the organisation enters a new phase of development. Bernard Saundry, Liza McNally, Chris Brooks, and Peter Summers have each made outstanding contributions during their time on the Board, and their expertise, leadership, and dedication.

Chairman Bernard Saundry, appointed in February 2018, is the longest-serving of the departing directors. He has played a pivotal role in guiding the organisation’s strategic growth. His Deputy Chair, Liza McNally, who joined the Board in September 2018, has been equally instrumental in expanding the profile and impact of AFL in Aotearoa. Together, their leadership has significantly enhanced the reach and recognition of the sport across the country.

Chris Brooks and Peter Summers joined the Board during the challenging period of the global pandemic. Their appointment brought much-needed stability and fresh opportunities at a time of great uncertainty. With strong backgrounds in their respective fields and a shared passion for sport, they have helped shape a resilient and forward-thinking platform for AFL New Zealand’s future direction.

We also acknowledge and thank elected Board member Michael Nettlefold, who chose not to seek re-election at the April AGM, concluding a decade-long tenure. A former CEO of St Kilda, Michael was instrumental in establishing AFL fixtures in New Zealand prior to joining the Board and has been a strong advocate for the sport’s development throughout his service.

The AFL New Zealand Board has worked tirelessly to guide the organisation, positioning it for a strong and dynamic future. Their efforts have helped strengthen the relationship with the AFL, ensuring continued development of the sport throughout the country.

AFL New Zealand is grateful for the leadership, guidance, and unwavering support of all outgoing directors, and we wish them continued success in their future endeavours.

Head of AFL Queensland and International Trisha Squires thanked the departing AFL New Zealand Board Members for their service.

“Bernard, Liza, Chris and Peter have demonstrated dedication and passion in growing our game in New Zealand for many years.

“Under their leadership they have navigated the code through a challenging period and recently strengthened the game’s position by engaging with the governing body.

“We thank them for enabling a smooth transition and for leaving the game and community in better shape.”

Joining the Board in their place are four AFL appointed members, Trish Squires, Rob Auld, Executive General Manager – Game Development, Lauren Cranstoun, Head of Broadcasting and Venues and Ben Drew, International Development Manager.
