Modified football game AFLX is set to be part of a drastically different lead in to the home and away season next year.
AFLX will be played on rugby-sized pitches, have seven players per side (with three or more per side on the interchange), and consist of quarters lasting no longer than 10 minutes.
The new version could suit the New Zealand market with the opportunity to host key events on grounds such as, Eden Park in Auckland and Forsyth Barr Stadium in Dunedin.
Melbourne ruckman Max Gawn said he liked the plan of the new AFL Format.
“I wouldn’t mind the IPL format, where you can go play for a different team… if you look at the IPL and the Big Bash, the guys love the Victorian Bushrangers but some of the guys end up playing for the Queensland Twenty20 team.”
AFLX is being dubbed the AFL’s answer to Twenty20 cricket and will include fewer players on a smaller field competing in matches of shorter duration.
