AFL New Zealand has released its 2022 calendar highlighting a return to an action packed schedule featuring key major events.

New Zealand Falcons vs AFLNZ All Stars

Initially scheduled to take place on AFL Grand final Day in September 2021, the match will now take place on April 10th 2022 at North Harbour Stadium. The match will take place the week following the AFLNZ Men’s Premiership Grand Final and 3rd vs 4th playoff.

The timing of the match will provide coaching staff from the two representative teams, a complete season of AFL New Zealand Premiership matches to assess for injury, fitness and more importantly a great form guide for those who could fit final selection criteria.

The match will feature on the same day as the AFL New Zealand Women’s Premiership Grand Final.

AFL New Zealand Women’s Premiership

The new look Women’s Premiership enters its third season and continues to grow.

Matches will be scheduled over a 9 week period commencing on February 13th with the Western Ravens taking on the Northern Storm and culminating on Grand Final Day at North Harbour Stadium on April 10th 2022.

A Grand Final breakfast will be hosted by Auckland’s Millennium Institute on the morning of the historic clash with the New Zealand Falcons set to take on the AFL New Zealand All Stars later in the afternoon.

AFL New Zealand Men’s Premiership

With the relocation of the Southern Saints to Canterbury, the Men’s premiership competition will now host matches in both Auckland and Christchurch for the coming season.

Matches will be scheduled over a 8 week period commencing on February 13th and culminating on Grand Final Day at North Harbour Stadium on April 3rd 2022.

Round 1 will feature a triple header incorporating the days opening AFLNZW clash followed by the Western Crows taking on the 2021 Premiers Central Giants followed by a visiting Southern Saints against the new look Northern Suns.

Under 18 New Zealand Falcons, AFL New Zealand Academy Levels1 & 2, Youth Kahu

With the hiatus to the international calendar over the past two years, Mornington Peninsula Junior Football League have committed to rescheduling their visit to New Zealand shores for April 8th to April 12th 2022.  

This will see four teams travel from Melbourne to New Zealand with the inclusion of a new youth team to via against the Under 18 New Zealand Falcons. All matches will take place at North Harbour Stadium in Auckland with four matches on Saturday April 9th and again on Monday April 11th 2022.

Under 18 New Zealand Falcons

The Under 18 Falcons will have the advantage of an intense schedule including the AFL New Zealand Men’s Premiership. Once appointed the coaching staff will have a 9 week Premiership schedule to view and assess the risings stars of the game within New Zealand

AFL New Zealand Academy

The AFL New Zealand Academy will commence on February 13th 2022 and take place over an 8 week time frame with hubs in Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch. The Academy will culminate with the MPJFL Tour in Auckland with participants arriving on Friday April 8th and departing following game 2 on Monday April 11th.

Identified talent within the Level 2 Academy and Youth Kahu participants will have the added advantage this season with the AFLNZ Premiership Development Player Programme which sees youth provided with the opportunity to be immersed into the Premiership competitions.

AFL Academy vs New Zealand Falcons

2022 will mark the ninth time the Australian Under-17 side has played against New Zealand. Whilst scheduling is in its infancy, venues are likely to be Wellington Stadium or Marvel Stadium Melbourne dependent on Covid travel restriction. The match will be scheduled for the ANZAC weekend to commemorate the strong bond between our two nations.

AFL New Zealand All Stars, Men’s and Women’s Itineraries

The All Stars concept will continue to be developed with Trans-Tasman interest providing adequate opportunities for the teams schedule to grow.  The Allstars has its similarities to Rugby’s Barbarians and will complement the events schedule of the New Zealand Falcons and New Zealand Kahu.

Matches in 2022 will be scheduled in Auckland, Wellington, Christchurch and Queenstown dependent upon the touring itineraries of travelling associations.

Women’s AFLNZ Allstars

March 6th in conjunction with the first ever AFL New Zealand Men’s Premiership to be held in Christchurch between Southern Saints and Western Crows. Dependent upon confirmation of touring team.

April 3rd in conjunction with AFL New Zealand Men’s Premiership Grand Final to be held at North Harbour Stadium. Dependent upon confirmation of touring team.

April 24th in conjunction with New Zealand Falcons vs AFL Academy. Dependent upon confirmation of touring teams.

Men’s AFLNZ Allstars

March 6th in conjunction with the first ever AFL New Zealand Men’s Premiership to be held in Christchurch between Southern Saints and Western Crows. Dependent upon confirmation of touring team.

April 10th match confirmed vs New Zealand Falcons at North Harbour Stadium Auckland

April 24th in conjunction with New Zealand Falcons vs AFL Academy. Dependent upon confirmation of touring teams.

Public Holiday Weekends

Both Easter and Waitangi weekends have no scheduled matches in place due to both the escalated costs of hosting events over holiday periods as well as some much needed time off for the AFL Community.
