The AFL New Zealand Rising Star award will be awarded weekly to a standout young player in the 2021 AFL New Zealand Premiership.
Each week the award will be allocated to those who show ability that favours the core components it takes to become an AFL Player. To be eligible to be nominated for the award, a player must be born in 2002 or younger.
The AFL New Zealand Rising Star award for round 5 of the 2021 AFL New Zealand Premiership has been awarded to Max Frew from the AFL New Zealand Academy.
Max hails from Christchurch and was playing in is first Premiership game as a development player. Situated in the forward line, Max played his role and looked comfortable up front. With a number of touches, Max was named in the Team of the week after a stellar first up effort.
“Having worked with Max through the youth and academy in Christchurch over the years, I couldn’t have been more delighted to have I’m him line up for the Northern Suns at the weekend. He showed he has all the makings of a premier big man in this competition, and that alone is very exciting.”
AFL New Zealand spoke to Max and asked him a couple of questions during the week.
What School do you attend?
I go the St Bedes College, in Christchurch
How did you get into AFL?
I got into AFL because of my older brother Alex Frew, who played for the New Zealand side. I started by joining into the Christchurch Bulldogs trainings with him and was hooked from there.
What do you enjoy about playing AFL?
I enjoy the AFL for the energetic atmosphere and the skills that you accumulate over time. I am constantly asking senior players and coaches to give me tips on how I can improve.
What are your goals for AFL in the future?
I hope to play for the top AFL team in New Zealand and hopefully get selected to play a bit of footy in Australia.
What do you think your biggest advantage is out on the field?
I think my biggest advantage is my height
