Casey Demons young gun to debut for NZ

18 year old Mykelti Lefau will return to New Zealand over ANZAC weekend to make his debut in the NZ Senior Hawks side when they play the Australian U17 National Academy at Westpac Stadium tomorrow.

Born and raised in Auckland and and now based in Melbourne, 194cm Lefau plays for the Casey Demons in the VFL and is starting to make a name for himself on the footy field. He is known for his strong marks and hard tackles and with a strong frame, Lefau cannot be missed during a game.

It was his former Head Coach at St Kilda City U19’s, Nathan Johns who made contact with AFL New Zealand to confirm Mykelti was eligible to represent his country.

In August 2016, Mykelti had a magical day for St Kilda City as he kicked 25 goals in a match against Carrum Patterson Lakes. It is a fantastic achievement for a player in only his fourth year of footy

Upon arriving in Wellington, Mykelti was selected to test in the AFL New Zealand National Combine at the ASB Sports Centre in Wellington. Testing in front of AFL scouts, Mykelti did not disappoint.

He set the quickest time for the 20m sprint with 2.91 seconds and had a running vertical leap of 100cm. Mykelti also took out the honours in the beep test finishing on level 14.10.

Being so new to the game, Mykelti is still rapidly improving and look to him on Monday to make a major impact for the NZ Hawks.
