Central Giants lock in 3-peat with undefeated season

The Central Giants have won their third premiership in a row, finishing the season unbeaten after beating the Saints by 17.

The Southern Saints, desperate to spoil the Giants unbeaten run, started fast with Jaymee Wooddin kicking the first goal of the game within 90 seconds of the game starting. They kept the pressure on, and the Giants started to panic. Some wayward goal kicking form the Saints, kept the score from blowing out, with Logan Toomer from the Giants managing to slot a goal, and bring the Giants to within 3 by the end of the first quarter

The Saints again started the quarter strong, kicking the first goal within 2 minutes of the quarter starting, but as the Giants have done all season, they wouldn’t be kept down for long, kicking the next two goals and taking a three point lead heading into the half time break.

The Giants turned up in the third, and made the Saints pay, reversing the pressure they felt earlier on and putting the Saints under the pump, Gaining some clean looks in front of goal and kicking four goals. This gave the Giants a 19 point lead and with one quarter to go and momentum on their side, they looked to have a firm grip on the game.

The pace of scoring settled in the final quarter as both teams started to fatigue, defense became the priority, with the Giants just needing to hold on, and the Saints needing to stop the Giants from scoring another point. The Saints earned some opportunities to score, but were unable to convert them into goals. Both teams finished the game with a goal a piece, but the damage done by the Giants in the third quarter was to great for the Saints to reel in. The Giants winning the game 17 and finishing the Season undefeated.

The Hero

Blake Waters was phenomenal for Giants. One of the tallest players in the comp, he also packs size and strength and can be an intimidating figure to square up around the ground. The physicality he brings on defense and when attacking loose ball, makes him hard to beat, and was a huge asset against the Saints.

The Support Crew

Josh Love is an incredible talent and a great find for the AFL New Zealand community. His marking ability is one of the best in the comp and in his first year in the Premiership he has impressed with his skillset, and was once again was of the best players on the park.

The Consolation Effort

Sam Anderson has really shone for the Saints in his return to the Premiership. Playing in the midfield he has been a key contributor for the saints all season and stood up for his side when they needed him. He has a great skillset and eye for the game, reading the flow of play well and getting in good positions to effect a contest and deliver the ball to a target
