Central Shakers hold off valiant stars in the wet

The Central Shakers have held off a huge wet-weather effort from the Southern Stars to come away with a 15-point win.

Under wet and wild conditions, the Southern Stars started hot, with Kaylee Tavendale and Zoe Gullery kicking the Stars’ first goals, and applying scoreboard pressure early in tough conditions. The Shakers answered back with a goal of their own, but the Stars ended the quarter leading by 8.

The Shakers shook off the first-game jitters and got to work in the 2nd quarter, keeping the Stars’ goal kickers at bay and working the ball up the ground, making the most of their opportunities in front of goal to push themselves back in front with two great goals.

With the rain settling in for the game and the ball becoming hard to handle, the game became a back-and-forth tussle, but the Wellington-based Shakers continued to mount pressure, and their experience under wild weather conditions gave them the edge, increasing their lead in the third quarter with two more goals, pushing the lead out to 17. The Stars gave it their all to claw their way back in the fourth quarter but only managed to close the gap to 15.

The Hero

Andrea O’Reilly has continued her fantastic form from 2023. A devastating runner through the midfield, Andrea provides great run and carry and is hard to stop when she gets up to speed. Her attack on the footy when it is on the ground is hard to match and made her the perfect asset in the wet conditions.

The Support Crew

Makenna Jones, Sam Lightfoot and Kirsten Meates were phenomenal in each of their lines, and helped drive the Shakers froward. Each of these players were split amongst the forwards, backs and midfielders, and their ability to both attack and defend regardless of their position.

The Consolation Effort

Melissa Baer had a great game for the Stars, playing a role in each of the Stars scoring opportunities and working hard to provide opportunities for herself and her team mates around the ground
