Covid 19 has had a drastic impact on elements of life and that includes our communities common thread, the sport and recreation sector.

The advice provided from key organisations including the New Zealand Government and Sport New Zealand has been regular and timely and has accentuated the important elements of health, safety, family, work place, sport and recreation. As we move towards a new normal and restored freedom, it is important to focus on elements that may affect the New Zealand AFL community and so the following correspondence targets the provision of information to assist members, clubs and leagues as we prepare the sports future return.

AFL New Zealand postponements and cancellations

AFL New Zealand Premiership

The completion of the 2020 AFLNZ Premiership will be guided by Covid-19 restrictions placed on domestic air travel, group sizing and personal contact.

AFL New Zealand will target, at a minimum, a Grand Final day to be held at North Harbour Stadium on date to be determined, during the upcoming domestic season. Consultation will be carried out the regional leagues before determining a suitability date to play the AFL New Zealand Premiership Grand Final. The day will include womens competition as well as all four teams from the male competition.

Mornington Peninsula JFL Academy and Under 18 Tours

These tours include AFLNZ Academy Level 1 Boys, Level 2 Boys, Youth Girls scheduled for Auckland and Under 18 New Zealand Falcons scheduled for Melbourne.

In all cases, the rescheduling of these tours will be guided by Covid-19 restrictions placed on International and Domestic air travel, group sizing and personal contact.

AFL New Zealand will work with Morning Peninsula to reschedule the postponed tours to dates between October and December 2020. If required, rescheduling could incorporate dates into 2021 to ensure those selected are provided the opportunity to represent New Zealand.

2020 International Cup

The International Cup for both the Senior Men and Women has been rescheduled to July/ August 2021 to be hosted by the Sunshine Coast Queensland Australia.

In all cases, the rescheduling of these tours will be guided by Covid-19 restrictions placed on International and Domestic air travel, group sizing and personal contact.

ANZAC 2020 Senior New Zealand Falcons vs AFL Academy

The match scheduled for Marvel Stadium has been cancelled. The annual match, in its 8th consecutive year, will take place again in 2021 with dates yet to be confirmed.


All school competitions for Secondary, Intermediate and Primary, in school delivery, after school delivery, AFL KiwiKick has been suspended due to Covid-19 restrictions. Recommencement will take place following a change in current restrictions and the recruitment/ redeployment of casual deliver staff.

Programs and Competitions on the watch list following updates on Covid-19 restrictions

  • Junior Competitions scheduled for October 2020 in Waitakere, North Shore, Pukekohe, Auckland Central, Wellington and Christchurch
  • Regional Men and Women Competitions in Auckland, Otago, Wellington, Canterbury due to commence on September 2020.
  • AFLNZ Academy due to commence in Auckland, Wellington and Canterbury February 2021
  • AFL New Zealand Premiership for Men and Women due to commence February 2021

With the commencement of regional league and club preseason training currently scheduled for July and the regional season fixtures in September, AFL New Zealand is currently investigating Online Applications that will assist with contact tracing.

Sport New Zealand Short Term relief Package

The relief package has been designed to assist clubs and regional organisations/ leagues. Although our regional leagues and clubs are both currently out of season, AFL New Zealand recommends that you investigate the opportunity for financial assistance where applicable.

All current members and leagues have had their details forwarded to Sport New Zealand to highlight your affiliation to AFL New Zealand and to ensure your eligibility.

Field bookings and winter sports codes impact on the 2020/21 season

Work is currently underway to better understand the impact Covid-19 will have on future field bookings for the upcoming AFL Season. The elongation of the winter sporting codes season could have an impact. It is important that all leagues and clubs increase communications with local council booking agents, to ensure certainty for the upcoming season requirements.

AFL New Zealand will forward information as it comes to hand regarding council decision making or potential changes to be aware of.
