The Western Crows have secured the remaining spot in next week’s Premiership Grand Final after a convincing 63 point win over the Southern Saints at QBE Stadium yesterday afternoon.
Needing a win to progress through to next week’s Grand Final, the Western Crows came out firing in the first quarter as they kicked 6 goals into the wind while keeping the Saints to only 1 major.
Newly crowned Men’s player of the Year Jay Johnson was making a big impact around the middle of the ground and was teaming up nicely with Jay Green.
It was more of the same in the second quarter as the kicked another 4 goals to extend their lead to 8 goals at halftime.
Crows midfielder and best on ground Ben Daly was phenomenal with his attacking runs out of the middle and was being supported by a forward Declan Honan-Crann who was provinding great leads.
The Saints fought back nicely in the 3rd quarter kicking 5 unanswered goals thanks to forwards Alex Fakatoumafi, Daniel Howie and Zac Maio. That brought the margin back to only 3 goals at the last change.
The Crow’s had the wind in the fourth quarter and were up for the challenge kicking a whopping 7 goals in the final term to run out convincing 10 goal winners.
This now sets up a mouth watering rematch next week when the 2 teams go head to head again in the Grand Final to see who will be the 2019 AFL New Zealand Premiers.
The 2019 AFL New Zealand Premiership will be played at QBE Stadium in Albany on April 14th with kick off at 2.45pm.
The entire squad played as a team throughout the game and that is what got them over the line.
The consolation effort:
Nico Donnell-Brown was inspirational in defence for the Saints as he gave up.
Alex Fakatoumafi was also strong in the forward line booting 3 goals.
