Double injury blow for Kiwi Dockers

The Fremantle Dockers AFLW side have been dealt a cruel blow ahead of the upcoming season, after AFL New Zealand Heritage stars Ange Stannett and Serena Gibbs sustained injuries during a recent training session.

Fremantle Dockers’ vice-captain, Ange Stannett, is set to miss the entire 2024 NAB AFLW season following an anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury to her left knee.

Stannett, 27, is a pivotal player for the Dockers, known for her leadership both on and off the field. Claire Heffernan, Fremantle’s Head of AFLW, expressed the club’s collective disappointment and commitment to supporting Stannett through her recovery.

“Ange is a loved and admired teammate and will be missed on the field in 2024,” Heffernan said. “Her leadership and care for her teammates is second to none, so as a group we are shattered this injury has put a pause on her ability to play the game that she loves.”

Heffernan reassured that the club will provide comprehensive support for Stannett following her surgery. “The Club will provide the best support for Ange post-surgery and beyond as she tackles her rehabilitation with the same determination and purpose that she brings to her on-field pursuits.”

In another setback for the team, key forward Serena Gibbs has sustained injuries to her medial collateral ligament (MCL) and posterior cruciate ligament (PCL) in her left knee, also during the same training session. Gibbs was on the verge of hitting her stride this pre-season, showing promising form.

“Serena’s injury is another stroke of bad luck, as she was building towards some impressive form and ready to hit pre-season with intensity and purpose,” Heffernan stated. “As with all of our injured players, we will provide the same care and support as Serena commits to her rehabilitation and works towards healing from this injury.”

The specific timelines for the return of both Stannett and Gibbs remain uncertain and will be confirmed post-surgery. The Fremantle Dockers are now focused on ensuring the best possible recovery for their injured players, emphasising the strength and resilience needed to overcome such setbacks.
