From the Canterbury Footy Frenzy Event, four individuals from the 30 that participated have been selected to travel to Auckland to participate in the inaugural AFL New Zealand Women’s Premiership match on March 31st 2019 as QBE Stadium.
AFL New Zealand Coordinator Olivia McFarlane and Canterbury Regional Coach Adam Clarke, were extremely happy with the results of the event.
Further participants are expected to be invited from the Dunedin training squad currently moving through their paces under the watchful eye of Otago Regional Coach, Reyne Westbury.
“We have a number of girls from the New Zealand Kahu that are now studying in Dunedin and this has added to the quality of our sessions. The newcomers to the Otago squad have adapted quickly and are matching or progressing towards the skill sets of their more experienced New Zealand representative team mates. I’m looking forward to a good number of our squad attending the AFLNZW Premiership match on the 31st of March.”
Final teams will be announced at the Women’s Premiership launch at Millennium Institute of Sport on March 30th where both sides will come together for a meet and greet.
The female competition will provide the perfect environment for girls transitioning from the Youth Competition formats to senior football and is the next step in finalising the pathway for women to participate in AFL within New Zealand.
Players will be selected from:
- Current Kahu Youth Girls
- New Zealand representatives
- AFL New Zealand Academy
