The AFL Female Footy Frenzy events are scheduled for Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch with an aim of increasing participation and awareness in support of the ever growing female AFL New Zealand participation pathway.
The Female Footy Frenzy events are a starting point for those new to the game and showcase the benefits to be gained through the social experiences and wellbeing generated by sport.
The event includes a focus on the fundamental skills and rules of the game and most importantly, the opportunity for participants to enjoy a game of AFL football.
The first ever Female Footy Frenzy Event took place in Christchurch, Hagley Park (Carlton Corner) on Sunday March 3rd this year in preparation for the inaugural AFL New Zealand Women’s Premiership held in Auckland on March 31st.
The scheduled events this year will be utilised by AFL New Zealand, the national sporting body, as an event based strategy to compliment and support local community initiatives to grow the game within the regions. AFL New Zealand has stepped up it’s efforts to cater for the growing demand for a provision of increased sporting opportunities for girls and women within the New Zealand sporting landscape.
The scheduled Female Footy Frenzy event dates will take place between October and December as the demand for formalised competitions increases in all regions.
From the event held in March 2019 this year, a number of participants from Wellington, Canterbury and Otago were selected to participate in the AFL New Zealand Women’s Premiership which was held at North Harbour Stadium in Auckland.
With the AFL New Zealand Women’s Premiership scaling up from 2019 and taking place again in an increased format in February, March and April 2020, it is expected that a large number of the players selected for the AFLNZ Women’s Premiership will be made up from those attending the Female Footy Frenzy events.
The exciting prospect of the New Zealand Kahu’s first involvement in the 2020 International Cup to be held in Australia in August 2020 is another amazing addition to the Women’s pathway for AFL in New Zealand
