The first ever AFL New Zealand Women’s National Combine took place at the ASB Sport Centre in Wellington on Friday April 21st and was hailed a success with athletes testing beyond expectation.
The combine was overseen by AFL staff including AFL Women’s player Aasta O’Connor from the Western Bulldogs. O’Connor had a chat with the athletes at the conclusion of the combine and spoke about the opportunities now available to young women to play AFL at the highest level. She was also very impressed with the level of talent of the NZ women.
International Ironwoman Danielle McKenzie was a standout in the Beep Test finishing on Level 12.9. Epsom Girls Grammar student and NZ Kahu Captain Killarney Morey was also exceptional during the event. Morey had the highest standing vertical leap of 58cm and clocked 8.26 seconds in the agility test.
2017 Results:
Standing Vertical Leap: 58cm – Killarney Morey and Jasmine Paki.
20m Sprint: 3.36 seconds – Buell Verkade.
Agility Test: 8.26 – Killarney Morey.
Beep Test: 12.9 – Danielle McKenzie.
