The Central Giants have overcome a slow start to win their opening game of the Premiership season as they defeated the Northern Suns by 17 points at North Harbour Stadium.
The Northern Suns ended season 2019 on a high and they managed to continue that form when Will Dickinson slotted their first goal within the first 2 minutes of the game.
The Giants managed to fight their way back in the second quarter as Harison Manks, Seb Serrano and Will Kempt stood tall in defence while NZ Captain Andrew Howison was providing alot of go forward ball around the ground.
Both sides endured some heavy hits around the contest and the Suns managed to find their way in the third quarter with Will Dickinson grabbing his second while veteran James Bowden kicked his first goal of the game to get the Suns back in front at three quarter time.
With the wind at their backs in the final term, the Giants had a number of scoring shots and managed to pull away to win by 17 points. The Giants now sit atop the ladder following the completion of round 1.
Seb Serrano was superb in defence for the Giants. His hard running off the halfback line provided a lot of attack out of the defence and heaved pressure on his opposition all game.
The support cast:
Giants midfielder Tristan Burnett was phenomenal through the middle of the ground. Burnett attacks the contest and creates multiple opportunities when he has the ball in his hands.
The consolation effort:
Number 1 draft pick Patrick Smith was named best for the Suns and had a strong game on debut and linked well with Ben Hick and Liam Beattie.
Will Dickinson was moved into the forward line and provided a strong target and finished the game with 2 goals.
“Our plan was to attack from the half back line today and I thought we executed that well. Our backline performed exceptionally and one of the standout players was Seb Serrano.” Central Giants Head Coach Izaak Williams.
“We probably weren’t good enough around the contest today and were a bit reliant on our more experienced players. Well done to the Giants and looking forward to next weeks game.” Northern Suns Head Coach, Adem Manderovic.
