The Central Giants kicked 4 goals in the final quarter to defeat the Southern Saints by 31 points, to now sit 2 games clear at the top of the Premiership table.
The Saints were up and about early in the first quarter as Harley Jenkins nailed the first goal of the game to get the reigning premiers in front at quarter time. The Giants had a number of opportunities in front of goal but were unable to convert.
The Giants found there kicking boots in the second term as James Southby kicked 2 of his 5 goals as they surged to the lead.
Captain Harison Manks and Troy Brown were playing well in defense as the Giants kept the Saints goalless in the second quarter.
The third term was even. Nico Donnell-Brown and James Kusel were defending well and running the ball out from their own 50. Speedsters, Michael Boyce and Josh Robles were linking well in the midfield.
The Giants pushed ahead in the final quarter as forwards, James Southby and Troy Brown played some great attacking footy. Lachlan Salmon was great in support in the forward line as the Giants claimed a 31 point victory.
The Giants now take on the Crows in round 6, while the Saints play off against the Suns on March 28th.
The hero:
Layton Cahill was named best on ground for the Giants after a inspiring game in the ruck. The Cantabrian is a tall figure on the field, and used that to his advantage against the Saints.
The support cast:
James Southby was at his brilliant best once again. The full forward kicked 5 goals in a dominant display.
The consolation effort:
Former Captain Michael Boyce, was the Saints best. Boyce was gritty around the contest and created a number of opportunities for the Saints.
Say what?
“The first 3 quarters was a real arm wrestle and the Saints were making us pay on turnovers. We were told to dig deep and really focus in the final quarter and it payed off for us.” Tristan Burnett, Central Giants.
“We’ll be a better team after that game today, but the Giants played great footy and deserved the win” Sean Mayes, Saints Head Coach.
