Giants name Sam McKenzie as Captain for 2018

The Central Giants have utilised their priority pick ahead of this year’s National Draft to secure the signing and Captaincy of former Premiership winning Southern Saints star, Samuel McKenzie for the 2018 AFL New Zealand Premiership.

The Giants have used a Priority pick to secure McKenzie under the ruling of the Retained Player List (RPL) Category 2, stating:

Sam has represented the Southern Saints for the last two Premiership seasons.

Each Premiership side will be able to retain up to three players that are Auckland based who have represented New Zealand at senior level in the past 12 months (if a Premiership side cannot supply the required amount of representatives from the 2017 season, a Priority Draft Pick will be allocated to rectify this.)

The Southern Saints had six Auckland based NZ Representatives from their 2017 squad, and after retaining Captain Michael Boyce, 2017 Premiership player of the year Andriu Sucu and fellow New Zealand team mate Carlos Donnell-Brown, the Giants swooped in to land McKenzie.

“After two successful seasons with the Southern Saints and winning the premiership last year I’m excited to join the Central Giants for 2018. No matter what level it is always on honour to captain a side and I feel privileged to do so in the AFL New Zealand Premiership.”

Sam is a regular in the New Zealand national side and recently played in his second AFL International Cup in Melbourne. The 29 year old is current Captain of the Mt Roskill Saints in the Auckland AFL and has former ties to the North City Demons in Wellington.

McKenzie was the golden boot runner up during the 2017 AFL New Zealand Premiership finishing with 20 goals for the season and is a marking forward/midfielder whose contesting marking skill provides him with the ability to play against much bigger defensive opponents and still provide potency with his goal kicking ability.

“I’m looking forward to linking up with new coach Izaak Williams and helping the side improve on the last two years and challenge for the title.”
