Giants show their flair as they topple the Suns

The Central Giants remain unbeaten in the 2021 Premiership, after they defeated the Northern Suns by 42 points in round 2 over the weekend.

The Giants were heavy favourites heading into the game, but the Suns came out firing and kicked the first goal of the game when Reed Cathcart used his speed to run into an open goal. Halfway through the opening term, the Giants found the right gear kicking 3 goals in 10 minutes to take a 12 point lead into quarter time.

The Giants controlled the second quarter. NZ Falcons skipper, Andrew Howison played his first game of the season and made a huge impact. Gun forward, James Southby was on form again, kicking 2 out of his 5 goals early on.

With a 5 goal lead at halftime, the Giants continued to move the ball forward in the third, through Kirk Murray, Mitch Weir and Chris Morel down back. The Suns did fight hard and squandered a number of opportunities in their forward 50.

Joey Alesich-Tamariki wound the clock back and found form in front of goal. The former Western Crows forward booted 4 goals alongside James Southby.

Suns debutant, Coby Dodd had a strong final quarter in the forward line kicking 2 late goals, but the Giants were too strong as they strolled to their second win of the season.

The hero:

Kirk Murray had a blinder of a game in the ruck for the Giants. From Hawkes Bay, Murray continues to show off his agility and skill at stoppages and acts as another rover in Justin Gauci’s midfield.

The support cast:

James Southby continues his kicking form with another 4 goals for the Giants and is well supported by small forward, Brandon Phillips, who is impressing in his first year in the Premiership.

The consolation effort:

Reed Cathcart was the star of the show for the second week in a row. The University Blues midfielder kicked 2 goals for the game and was heavily involved around the contest all game. Captain, Ben Hick was awarded best on ground for the Suns after a tremendous game in the midfield.

Say what?

“The Suns made a real contest of today’s game and it felt closer than what the scoreboard suggested. We continued where we left off from last week and the squad continues to build.” Justin Gauci, Central Giants.

“I felt that the difference today for us was definitely our forward entries into our forward 50. Some of the decisions we made could’ve closed the gap but we were unable to execute.” Adem Manderovic, Suns Head Coach.
