The Central Giants have caused a big upset in round 3 of the AFL New Zealand Premiership as they defeated the Western Crows by 23 points at North Harbour Stadium.
The win was set up by a terrific defensive effort which saw the Giants holding the Crows scoreless for the first one and a half quarters of the game.
Giants ruckman Kirk Murray dominated early as the Giants went on the attack from the first bounce.
With a best on ground performance last week, Mitch Weir was once again playing some great football kicking 3 goals in the second quarter alone.
The Crows midfield of Jay Green and Te Kopa Tipene-Thomas were trying their best but weren’t able to match the ferocity of the Giants around the contest.
A 5 goal third quarter kicking with the wind sealed the game for the Giants as players were utilising the strong breeze to kick goals from the centre square.
The defending premiers sparked a small comeback in the final term but the dmage had been done as the Giants claimed their second win of the season and jump into second spot of the Premiership ladder.
Troy Brown is normally a winger but was thrown into the backline to use some pace out of defence and was named best for the Giants after a solid game of footy.
The support cast:
Mitch Weir continues to improve in the competition and ended the game with 4 goals for the Giants.
The consolation effort:
Defender Josh Copeland had a big game for the Crows. He played a key role in the backline and was then asked to move up the ground where he created a number of opportunities late in the game.
“It was a great effort from the whole team today. It was hot out there and the tanks were empty after half time but they kept working hard and got the win.” Izaak Williams, Central Giants.
“The Giants executed better than us today and deserved the win. They held their marks and kicked their goals and made the most of their opportunities so congratulations to them.” Matt Cawley, Western Crows.
