The Whangarei weather turned on a fantastic day for the Northland Junior Hawks competition for Yr 9 & 10 boys & girls on Tuesday 30th October at the Tikipunga Sports Ground.

There were a total of 4 boys teams & two girls teams competing from Bay of Islands College, Tikipunga High School, Christian Renewal School & Whangarei Girls High. All games were played in fantastic spirits, with superb sportsmanship, skills, team work & crowd support shown by both players & supporters.

The Tikipunga High girls team comprehensively won all three games against the Whangarei Girls High team to take out the championship for 2012. All girls from both teams played hard & fair with some of the hits matching those of the boys. It was great to see how much fun both teams were having as well as giving it everything they had.

The boys competition saw some superb skills, team work and trench warfare in action. Christian Renewal School one of the smaller area schools in Northland did extremely well to field a team that started off slowly, but grew in confidence as the day went on and gave a couple of teams a run for their money.  The final match of the day between Tikipunga High School & Bay of Islands College was a truly fantastic spectacle of AFL. This bruising encounter saw Tikipunga playing with the wind in the first half and taking a commanding lead going in to the second half. However Bay of Islands College pulled back the score with some slick kicking nailing several 6 pointers from all over the park. In the end Bay of Islands College edged away to a 44-27 win from a tough and skilful Tikipunga High School side that never gave up.

As a supporter it was a great day to observe many fantastic athletes and teams showing us their skills, team work and fair play whilst still having fun with each other.
